Every leader and manager needs to understand the role Human Resource Management and Development plays within their own departments. Most people regard the Human Resource function as another administrative activity that impairs the effectiveness of operations. Personnel often cannot see the value of HR because the range of activities that take place from day to day are obscure.
We cannot lay claim to our people being our greatest asset if we don’t know what is required to successfully manage these assets. HR is a facilitation vehicle for the organisation to ensure that the employees are received into the company, maintained with harmony and high morale throughout their years of service and should there be separation, this is conducted in the most equitable way. To do this, policies and procedures are necessary which are grounded in the latest legislation. People as our assets contribute to our culture, ethos, brand, company prestige and growth. We therefore develop people and continually adjust their career paths so that maximum personal development is achieved. Keeping people motivated is not only about meeting monetary requirements. Employees actively seek recognition, reward, ongoing challenges for personal growth and involvement.
Human resource management (HRM) is the management of an organisation’s most valued assets - employees who individually and collectively contribute to the achievement of corporate objectives. The terms ‘human resource management’ and ‘human resources’ (HR) have largely replaced the term personnel management, as a description of the processes involved in managing people in organisations. Labour Relations is factored into Human Resource Management, so that corrective action can be taken if there is factual evidence of misconduct or poor performance. Balance is maintained between serving the interests of the employee and the company.
The goal of human resource management is to help an organisation to meet strategic goals by attracting and retaining employees and also to manage them effectively.
In our module on human resource management, we address key issues that comprise HRM and relate them to the corporate environment in a practical and hands-on approach.
