ACADEMIC CURRICULUM
> Corporate Governance and Law
All individuals operate within a legal framework which helps to control and predict the way people behave for the greater good of a company, community or country. Corporate governance has become a key concept for leaders and managers because it describes an essential organisational behaviour. It creates a mechanism of checks and balances which ensures that the decision making power is not abused. It also ensures that this power is used with care and responsibility to meet stakeholder expectations. In practical terms, corporate governance aims to avoid negative surprises and it supports the strength of the brand.
Corporate behaviours are ways of working in a corporate culture that are valid. They are rendered ‘a competency’ because they are followed unconsciously everywhere, and every time without the necessity of written instruction or explicit mandate. Corporate governance is a desired behaviour in any business environment. It is not a method or a chapter in a project document. Yet it needs to form an intrinsic part of everything we do.
As a leader, it is crucial to understand the various and relevant dimensions of law that impact on their daily lives, activities and staff, especially Corporate Law and Corporate Governance. This module introduces the student to key legal aspects that are relevant to the sphere of leadership within any organisation and of course, more specifically our own.
Issues and case studies are discussed to maximise understanding. As with all other modules, meaningful and practical activities are created to enable the application of learning into real time practise.
